Finally, Lucius brought in our last interview of the day, a shifty sort of fellow who kept glancing around as if he expected us to clap him in chains at any moment.

“You know what I seek,” I said, wearily sinking into my chair.

The man nodded.

I examined my nails. “Who told you the crucified Nazarene was alive?”

The man swallowed hard. “A friend . . . of a friend.”

“A friend of Yeshua’s? Perhaps a disciple?”

The man opened and closed his mouth, a picture of idiocy.

“Whatever you say,” I warned, “make it the truth. This day has been longer than most, and my patience has nearly evaporated.”

“This friend said he was told—the sighting was told of—by two women.”

I lowered my hand and studied our suspect. This was new information.

“They went to the tomb,” he continued, “before dawn on Sunday and found it empty. Later they met Yeshua on the road—alive. They spoke with him.”

I glanced at Lucius, then focused more intently on our suspect. “Their names?”

The man hesitated.

“One way or another, we will have an answer.”

“I know only one name,” he said slowly. “She is a woman with a certain reputation. Mary of Magdala.”

“Do you know where we can find this woman?”

He spread his hands. “Perhaps . . . if you will follow at a distance.”

I stood and picked up my sword. “Lead us to this place.”

As we went out, I snatched my coins from the altar niche.
